Dreyfoos students win Congressional Arts Competition
Thursday 23 July, 2009

Dreyfoos School of the Arts visual art students Vinh Pham, a graduating senior from Royal Palm Beach, and Jessica Kleinman, a Dreyfoos junior from Boca Raton, were recently announced as the first place winner and runner up winner, respectively, of the Congressional Arts Competition.  The other runner up winner was Danielle Zfat of Donna Klein Jewish Academy.

Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL) made the announcement at a reception May 29 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.  As the first place winner, Pham and his parents were presented with three roundtrip tickets to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines, where they will join Congressman Klein on June 24 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception honoring the young artists.  He also received a year pass to the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

The 28th Annual Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery, provides Members of Congress with the unique opportunity to showcase the talents of their creative, dynamic high school constituents.  Since the competition’s inception in 1982, thousands of students have participated.  This year the theme was left up to the artist’s imagination.

Pham’s winning piece, representing the 22nd Florida Congressional District, will be showcased at the Capitol in Washington, DC, along with the pieces created by the winning artists from Congressional Districts across the country.

The Dreyfoos School of the Arts sophomore was tapped by those planning West Palm Beach's inaugural festival to create art for a commemorative poster - 10,000 copies of which will be handed out for free at Tuesday's downtown celebration.

The College Board rates Dreyfoos School of the Arts’ Visual Arts Department number one in the world
Monday 22 January, 2007
According to The College Board’s 2007 Report to the Nation, the studio art advanced placement students at The Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts had the highest percentage of students passing the AP exam of any large high school in the world. This is the second time the school’s visual art department has received this distinction, having achieved it previously in 2005.

Dreyfoos is a public arts magnet high school located in Downtown West Palm Beach, which draws students from throughout the county. Students must pass a rigorous audition and qualify in one of five art areas: dance, communications arts, theater, music and visual arts. The school is ranked among top 35 public high schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine.

Advanced Placement: Participation and Performance on the Rise in Florida

The College Board’s report also revealed that Florida ranks number one in the nation for the largest percentage of public school students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams.  During 2006, 36.4 percent of Florida’s public school students participated in AP compared to 32.9 percent in 2005 and 24.2 percent nationally. There were 13,221 more students who took an AP exam, the largest increase to date, for a total of 90,681 participating students.

AP Exam performance is also on the rise in Florida.  During 2006, 19.6 percent of Florida public high school seniors graduated passing one or more AP exams ranking the state seventh in the nation. Nationally, the average was 14.8 percent, a 6 percent increase for Florida during the last year.  Only four other states have had a 6 percent or higher increase. The total number of Florida students receiving a passing score (3 and above) on an AP exam also increased by 11.8 percent since 2005.  Additionally, the College Board recognized several public Florida high schools for their exemplary AP programs. For the second year in a row, Florida has more schools recognized than any other state in the nation
